THE LALLA ROOKH

Barque, 350 tons — built Jersey, 1839

The 350-ton barque Lalla Rookh was built in Jersey by Edward Allen in 1839. Constructed on the beach at Havre des Pas, just east of the town of St Helier.

Her dimensions were 99.9 x 24.0 x 16.8 ft.

She was initially used for transporting emigrants to South Australia.

On her tragic voyage in 1850, she was sailing from the Brasils, heavily laden with a valuable cargo of rum and sugar.

She was bound for her home port of London when she was caught in a fierce storm in the English Channel, 3 miles offshore from Worthing.
